Masterpiece, London 2022
Masterpiece this year was a great success for my London dealer, the Jonathan Cooper Gallery. We sold ‘Eclipse’ at the beginning of the fair, which was some good news but that also meant that the painting, which I felt was one of my best equestrian one’s to date, lost it’s wall space and was not on show for to see.
The other painting I had there, ‘Reach’, remains unsold. I was hoping for some sympathetic lighting for my oil paintings, CRI 95 or higher, with suitable diffuser so as not to blast the canvas with the usual warm temperature spotlight, which does an oil painting no favours. Oil canvas is a multitude of little bumps and valleys which, when painted with shiny oils reflect light back at the viewer unless carefully angled, unlike pastel and watercolour surfaces and mediums. So my subtly cool-gold painting appeared to all as a nice shade of orangey-pink!
